When I want to own a word, these are the places I go to. I used all these places to help me create all the worksheets and activities found on this page:
- Wordnik.com -- Compare definitions from many different dictionaries. See the word used in Twitter. See examples of the word.
- Dictionary.com -- look words up and compare definitions from different dictionaries.
- Ninja Words -- I click to this from Wordnik.com. I really like the way it will keep track of all the words you look up.
- Merriam-Webster.com -- Good for listening to pronunciations and yet another definition.
- Nytimes.com -- After you search a word, be sure to click on Advance search. This is a great way to see the word used in context and to see how often the word is used.
- Google News -- You can see the word used in context. For fun, click Archive on the left menu, and you will be given a table that shows the frequency of the word over the past 100 years.
- Google Books -- Yet another place to see words used in context. Search a word and look at the results. You can also choose to switch to magazines. And you can choose time periods.
Resources for General Vocabulary Study
- Merriam Webster Word of the Day Podcast -- I listen everyone morning while I make breakfast.
- Podictionary.com -- Great Podcast. A word a day with some interesting trivia and etymologies.
- Way with Words -- Great radio show about words and their origins. This usually runs about 50 minutes. It is entertaining and educational.
- Number 2 -- Good site to study vocabulary for SAT and ACT.
